There is something deeply optimistic – borderline delusional – about the Irish man in summer. The sun peaks out for about 6 and a half minutes, suddenly we are emotionally convinced we live in the South of France. Shirts are abandoned, pale limbs emerge blinking into the light, and somewhere a pair of cargo shorts that should have been retired since 2004 gets a second chance of life.
Let’s be honest summer fashion has never been our strong suit. This is a nation raised on layers, waterproofs, and the quiet understanding that the sky cannot be trusted. We are genetically and culturally unprepared for “dressing light”. Our skin tone alone – best described as “moonlitparchment” – doesn’t exactly scream mediterranean ease.
But it doesn’t have to be that way guys.
Let’s start with the simple short. Ah yes, the Irish man’s greatest summer gamble. Too long, and you look like you are about to fix someone’s sink. Too short and you think you are Paul Mescal playing in a local Gaa match. Aim for somewhere just above the knee – tailored, not baggy, and ideally not camo. If your shorts have more pockets than a snooker table, it’s time to let go.

Footwear is another battlefield. Flip-flops are not a personality. Nor are they appropriate outside of very specific scenarios, most of which do not occur in Ireland. A clean pair of trainers or lightweight loafers will carry you through most of these summer months without making your feet look like they have given up on life.
We are a huge fan of Grenson here at Sole88 & these Frank Loafers are one of my favourite options but if you can’t reach the dizzy prices check out the highstreet like Zara & Arket for affordable equivalents.
Check out an upcoming blog on Trainers v Shoes where will delve Into the resurgence of “The Shoe” in fashion. But also the dramatic fall of “ The Trainer “ and what are the big 3 brands doing to get themselves back on track.

But summer is the one time of year that we can branch without fear of judgement. Think soft blues, sage greens & even the occasional pastel. You don’t need to dress like a Gelato stand but a bit colour won’t kill you. In fact it might distract from the fact that you have forgotten sunscreen.
Speaking of which wear sunscreen please. Funny enough there is nothing stylish about looking like a cooked lobster by 3pm. The goal is to be sun-kissed not emergency room chic.
Watch out for an upcoming blog where we showcase 6 of our favourite Summer outfits to help you navigate through the next few months.
